Unclaimed Tax Refunds Top 19-Million

The Internal Revenue Service says about 19-million-dollars in unclaimed tax refunds are waiting for nearly 21-thousand Tennesseans who failed to file a federal income tax return for 2004. According to the "Nashville Business Journal," the 2004 returns must be filed with an IRS office no later than April 15th in order to collect the unclaimed refunds. In cases where a return was not filed, the law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity to claim a refund. If no return is filed to claim the refund within that time period, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.
