After a missed extra point in the fourth quarter, things begin to unravel for the Cannon County Lions in Jasper Tennessee Friday night. The Lions kept things close in the non-region game against Marion County, even pulling out to lead at one point 21-14.
Marion then scored 14 unanswered points and took back control of the game 28-21. On the ensuing kickoff, Lions kick returner Melvin Young returned the ball 68 yards for a touchdown, however the extra point was missed and the Lions trailed 28-27. On the next drive Marion scored and converted a 2 point play to put the score up 36-27. As a result of needing two scores to win the game, the Lions rushed things a little too quickly throwing two interceptions in their last three possessions and Marion County ran out the clock winning the ball game 43-27. Lions Tony Harris was the leading rusher as he carried the football 20 times and gained 151 yards scoring two of the touchdowns. Melvin Young on the ground had 20 carries but only 40 yards. Young gained 118 all purpose yards and one touchdown. Josh Seng went 1 for 9 in the air 65 yards with one touchdown and 2 interceptions. Cannon County is now 2-5 and has to win their last three games of the season in order to be eligible for postseason play.
The Lions will come back to Fred Schwarz Field in Woodbury Friday for homecoming in a region matchup with an improved Upperman team coming to battle for a playoff spot.
