Governor Disappointed With Response To Buyout Offers

Monday, 21 July, 2008

Governor Phil Bredesen says the state may have to lay off some workers early next year unless considerably more people take the voluntary buyout offer. The goal is to shed 22-hundred people from the state's workforce in order to help shore up the budget. So far, Bredesen says 14-hundred people have applied for the buyouts. He says that number is well below projections. It's expected to net out to eleven or 12-hundred people by the time the state processes applications from eligible employees. They're due by early August.
