Council Gets First Look At New Public Square

Jan 6 2009

The first meeting in 2009 for the Woodbury Board of Mayor and Alderman covered topics from a new look for the square to beer sales and water meters.

County Executive Mike Gannon presented the board with blueprints for the new look of down town Woodbury. The plan will include underground power lines, new sidewalks, new street lights and cross walks. According to Gannon, “McMinnville recently had a revitalizing of their court house square and ours will look much the same. If the bids are awarded by spring of this year then the project could be completed before the end this year.” Also the board was advised that a purchase was made of 300 feet of the original fence that surrounded Cannon County Court House dating back to 1836. This fence will be incorporated into the revitalization plan. The town of Woodbury and Cannon County were jointly granted an enhancement grant from the state for the project.

Dan Bowling owner of First Stop Market, on Main Street, requested the board grant a beer license so his establishment could sale beer. He assured the board there would be no beer sales on Sundays. He also advised the board that in the first month of lottery ticket sales his store took in $3,000.00 in ticket sales. The board advised that a committee would meet to discuss beer sales within city limits and give an answer in the February meeting.

While addressing the council, Bowling advised the board that he will be opening a Taco Bell within the city limits. He is currently looking at properties for the new business.

In other business before the board:

Anthony Pelham of James C. Hailey and Company presented the board with a bid from Madewell Construction. The board reviewed and awarded Madewell Construction $90,000.00 to replace 1,000 water meters.

Mary Jean Cook a teacher from Woodland School requested permission to conduct 2 road blocks in the spring to help raise funds for a Junior Beta trip to Florida. Cannon County student Hunter Brown was elected state president and will be traveling to Florida along with approximately 40 other Cannon students to support him in his run for national president. The average cost will be $460.00 per student. The road blocks will help raise monies to offset the expense of the trip. A date for the road block will be announced at a later date.

A discussion was held regarding parking in front of businesses along Main Street. It has been pointed out by business owners that some cars are left for a day at a time in front of their businesses. Merchants have requested a 2 hour limit on parking. The board will research this problem and review in the February meeting. Chief Burnett advised the police department would do their best to keep an eye on parking and advised that people usually will let them know if someone has been parked too long. Alan Paschal requested that the board compare painting 2 hour limit parking on spaces verses putting up individual signs.

Charlie Harrell was re-appointed to serve in the position of vice mayor.

In view of recent heavy rains, Public Works Director, Alan Paschal requested the water restriction be lifted. The board agreed and the motion was granted.
