The Cannon County Board Of Education met for their regular monthly meeting Tuesday night in the gymnasium of the Eastside Grammar School. All board members, Chris Blackburn, Shannon Davenport, Cathy Hyatt, Roy Parker and Chairman Randy Gannon, along with Director Of Schools Barbara Parker and Student Board Member Jeran Tenpenny were present at the meeting.
Karen King, principal of Eastside School, welcomed the school board and the people in attendance. She gave a report of some of the highlights of the school year so far for Eastside School.
Ms. King thanked the school board and Jennifer Insell for the installation of the new freezer at the school. She also reported that this was the second year of successful fundraising at the school without having to sell anything to raise funds. With Eastside being a Title 1 School, there was an audit conducted. As a result of the audit, there were no findings to report. TCAP scores were among the top in the county.
Ms. King then pointed the audience to the gym where several science projects were displayed. The School is currently holding a science fair.
The meeting itself started with Barbara Parker presenting two award certificates. The first certificate was presented to William Freddy Curtis who was recently named Tennessee Outstanding Social Teacher of the Year. The second certificate went to Marcia Melton as she was named the Upper Cumberland Supervisor of the Year.
The board approved the consent agenda with the exception of the approval of the list of Jr. Lions Football coaches and assistant coaches. The subject was moved to the actual meeting agenda to be discussed.
The consent agenda included approving several field trips, approving a copier lease for the Short Mountain School, and approving Westside Grammar's appling for a FCA foundation grant.
Eastside principal Karen King had addressed the board during their workshop Monday night concerning the installation of a chain link fence at the school. This will be done at the school's expense. The board approved the project.
The board approved the Cannon County Senior Trip Rules of Conduct and Eligbility Rules
Also on the evening's agenda, the Board was scheduled to discuss fees for use of school buildings. Ms. Parker asked the board to table this to the June meeting so they could have time to research this. The Board approved the tabling of the item.
The board then discussed the approval of the list of Cannon County Jr. High Football Coaches and Assistant Coaches. The board had discussed this during the workshop held Monday night at the Cannon County Board Of Education Offices. Apparently there were two new assistant football coaches that were added to the staff for the upcoming season.
The board then allowed the list that was presented to them to remain only for spring practice which takes place March 8-19th. Then they will look into the matter by possibly appointing a committee consisting of Board member Roy Parker, Chairman Randy Gannon, Principal of Woodbury Grammar School Gerald Tidwell, Cannon County High School Head Football Coach Joel Schrenk, and Current Head Jr High Lion Head Coach Randy Farnsworth to discuss the various questions and concerns about the program. The board was then informed that there will be a meeting concerning the Jr. High Lions football program. March 30th at the Cannon County Election Office at 6:00pm.
School Director Barbara Parker closed out the meeting by telling the board she plans to bring a revised school calendar to the board for approval in the April meeting. So far, the schools have to makeup one day from all the recent weather cancellations.
