Unemployment Numbers Going Down In Cannon County

Cannon County’s unemployment rate dropped half a point in July, according to the latest figures. Joblessness in Cannon County dropped from 9.6 percent in June to 9.1 percent. The county labor force is 6,550 people…and all but 600 of those are employed.

Tennessee’s overall unemployment rate for July was 9.8 percent, down two-tenths of a percentage point from the revised June rate of 10.0 percent. The national unemployment rate for July was 9.5 percent. Jobless rates decreased in 87 counties, increased in five and remained the same in three.

Cannon County’s neighbors all saw drops in joblessness in the latest report. Wilson County has the lowest area rate at 8.2 percent, down four-tenths of a point. Rutherford County had the largest drop in unemployment, at seven-tenths of a percent, to 8.6 percent overall. Dekalb County’s jobless rate dropped three-tenths of a percent to 9.8 percent. Coffee County’s rate dropped a half-point, to 10.1 percent. Warren County had the highest unemployment rate in the area at 11.3 percent, down by a half-point.

Lincoln County registered the state's lowest county unemployment rate at 6.4 percent, down from 6.7 percent in June. Scott County had the state’s highest unemployment rate at 19.4 percent, followed by Marshall County at 15.7 percent.

Knox County had the state’s lowest major metropolitan rate of 7.5 percent, down from 7.8 percent in June. Davidson County was 9.3 percent, Hamilton County was 8.4 percent and Shelby County was 9.9 percent.
