Two Republican legislators have filed a bill to combat voter fraud and keep illegal aliens from casting ballots in Tennessee. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Mae Beavers and freshman Representative Terri Lynn Weaver’s bill would require voters to present a photo identification card at the polls. Their proposed legislation would recognize numerous types of photo IDs, including a drivers’ license, military ID, valid passport, various government-issued employee ID cards and any other federal and state-issued IDs that contain photos of the voter. The bill also provides that anyone who can’t produce proper identification will be issued a provisional ballot. It will only be counted if the voter’s current and valid identification can be verified. The sponsors say their proposal will cut down on fraud and ensure that only U.S. citizens are voting. Seven states already require voters to produce a photo ID at the polls.
