Members of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security will join the Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) Police Department, the Murfreesboro Police Department and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office for a community shredding event on Friday, October 18. The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rutherford Parking Lot on the campus of MTSU. The lot is located at Rutherford Boulevard and the intersections of MTSU Boulevard and Alumni Drive.A shredding truck, provided by Cintas Document Shredding of Nashville, will be on site to destroy private documents, including bills or other records containing personal information. There will be a two-box or trash bag maximum for individuals and a five box maximum for businesses. No cardboard or non-paper items will be accepted.
“Identity theft is a growing crime in our state and around the country. This event was organized to offer a safe location for citizens to shred and dispose of personal and private documents. We encourage MTSU students and the residents of Rutherford County to utilize this service and protect their identity,” Tennessee Highway Patrol Captain Stacy Williams said. Williams oversees the department’s Identity Crimes Unit.
Williams also noted the support from local law enforcement agencies to help educate the community on identity crimes.
All vehicles must be in line by 6 p.m. in order to discard items.
