From all evidence of the first night of budget cuts, the various departments of Cannon County will be granted little leeway if any in the various budget requests. $364,365.00 were cut from the budget requests of six county departments during the Cannon County Budget Committee’s review Thursday night at the County Courthouse. The biggest cuts came in the request of the County Volunteer Fire Departments. The Department turned in a budget request of $368,725.00 but after the budget committee started slicing, the department was left to run on a budget of $60,170.00 The biggest request was in line item of Motor Vehicles for $200,000.00 which the committee voted no on.Other departments feeling the axe of any budget increases include the Register of Deeds which trimmed $2,400 off the request . County buildings only asked for a small increase to total out at $219,015.00 but the committee trimmed $5000 from that total to end up at $214,015.00 Circuit Court saw $11,000 of requested increase in budget disappear. The Cannon County Sheriff’s Department initial budget request was for $938,361.00. The requests included a 3.5 percent increase in salaries for the employees as well as $25,000 for a new patrol car. The committee then moved the $25,000 line item to the drug fund bringing the total request down to $910,451.00. The jail request ended up being $728920.00 after only $1500 of budget trimming.
