May 19th Donor Appreciation Blood Drive was very rewarding for the One hundred and twelve who came out to give. Eighty seven was able to donate, of which eight gave double red cells, making a total of 95 units given on the goal of 97. Each donor and volunteer received several door prizes from the local businesses in town. Howard Witty donated his 168 pint, receiving a 21 gallon pin. Ann McBride received a 7 gallon pin, Cheryl K. Franklin received a 6 gallon pin, Stephen Moss a 3 gallon, Kayla Hindman and Sandra Satchell both received 2 gallon pins, and Weldon Parkinson received a 1 gallon pin. Coming out to donate for the first time: Alicia A. Bailey, Kelcey M. Evans, Tammy Mears, Dustin W. Taylor, Deana J. Pillow, Von Carl Franklin, and Barbara Strickland. At the end of the blood drive, tickets corresponding to the number given when signing in, were mixed together and number 102 was drawn. Randy L. Slone became the winner of a $100 Visa Gift Card. The Woodbury Lions Club and the American Red Cross wishes to express a hardy “thank you” to all the local heroes who gave of themselves for others, and would like to recognize local businesses who helped make the drive a big success.

Cannon County’s Lauren Ruehlen Committs To Maryville College
Lauren Ruehlen has committed to continue her education, and basketball career at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. The daughter of Danny and Kristie Ruehlen, Lauren was a strong post player for the Lions at Cannon County High School.
This 5’11” standout was a four-time All-District performer for Coach Michael Dodger at Cannon County. Ruehlen averaged 7.6 points per game during her career while pouring in 851 career points. She was a force on the boards with 685 career rebounds, ranking third all-time in Cannon County’s school history. Her effort and leadership helped the Lions earn the 4AA Regional title and a berth in the semi-finals of the state tournament with an overall record of 30-8 during her senior season.
Darrin Travillian, head coach of the Maryville College women’s Basketball team, said, “We are thrilled to add Lauren to our roster. She comes from a winning program, as evidenced by her success in the state tournament, and she knows what it takes to be successful. Lauren is an excellent rebounder on both ends of the floor and has a nice touch around the basket. She will spend this upcoming season rehabbing her injured knee and getting acclimated to college life, but we know she will add a great deal to our team in the near future.”
This fall, Ruehlen will join a team that finished the 2010-11 season with a 21-5 record winning the Great South Athletic Conference regular season crown by posting a perfect 14-0 mark during the regular season. The Scots have earned 17 invitations to the NCAA tournament pacing the school’s athletic department in post-season appearances.
Maryville College is ideally situated in Maryville, Tenn., between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Knoxville, the state’s third largest city. Founded in 1819, it is the 12th oldest institution of higher learning in the South and maintains an affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Known for its academic rigor and its focus on the liberal arts, Maryville is where students come to stretch their minds, stretch themselves and learn how to make a difference in the world. Total enrollment for the spring 2011 semester is 1,103 men and women, representing approximately 17 states and 15 countries.
Farm Service Agency Announces County Committee Election
Donny Green, Cannon County FSA County Executive Director, announces that the nomination period for the 2011Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Committee Election is underway. The nomination period continues through August 1, 2011.FSA encourages all producers to participate in the county committee election process by nominating candidates by the August 1 deadline. FSA has seen a trend in recent years of increased nominations of minority, beginning farmers, and women producers and we hope that will continue. Committees apply their judgment and knowledge to make decisions on county commodity price-support loan eligibility, establishment of allotments and yields, conservation programs, disaster programs, employment and other farm program-related issues. Nationwide, there are more than 7,800 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. Committees consist of three to five members who are elected by eligible local producers. Nominations and elections are open to all eligible candidates and voters without regard to race, color, religion, nation origin, age, sex, marital status or disability.
