Members of Sons of Confederate Veterans Murfreesboro Camp No. 33 will host the 117th SCV National Reunion beginning Wednesday at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the oldest Confederate Veterans descendant organization with more than 30,000 members worldwide. Membership is available to any male descendant of a Confederate soldier that served honorably in the Confederate military. With a membership of 180, Murfreesboro SCV Camp No. 33 is the second largest in the Tennessee Division and ranks among the top 10 camps nationally.
The reunion has been in the planning stages since 2007. With this being one of the sesquicentennial years of the War Between the States, some 1,500 SCV members and guests are expected to attend.
The reunion also conicides with the 150th anniversary of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Murfreesboro raid and Battle of Murfreesboro.
The event includes a Civil War show open to the public on July 13-14. For more information, call James Patterson at 615-812-0206 or mboroscv33@aol.com.

Woodbury Lions Club Horse Show Takes Place Today
More than 35 classes will be featured during the 2012 Woodbury Lions Club Horse Show. The Show has been recognized for many awards including that of the Best One Night Horse Show 7 times. The Horse show also serves as the biggest fundraiser for the Woodbury Lions Club as the money made from the show goes to help fund many of the charities that the Lions Club Supports. The show will take place at the Clayton Glenn Field Of Champions at the Cannon County Fairgrounds. There are two sessions to the horse show. The first session will begin at 3:30 in the afternoon with the evening session that features the premium classes is slated to begin at 6:30 this evening. WBRY AM-1540/FM96.7 will have live full coverage of the Woodbury Lions Club Horse Show in it’s entirety beginning at 3:30 today.
$41,000 Worth Of Budget Requests Trimmed
With figures added in for a 3 percent raise for county employees for the2012-2013 fiscal year, the Cannon County Budget Committee looked to trim
other numbers throughout the entire budget in anticipation of putting a
recommendation together to present the Cannon County Commissioners in time
for their Saturday July 14th meeting. County employees have not had a
raise in 5 years and the Budget Committee have been mulling over
recommending a budget with a raise in place. Revenues and Expense for the
2011-2012 fiscal year are close to being accurate since the year ended
June 30th. Estimated Revenue is now projected to be $5,724,700.00 with
expenditures for the 2011-2012 year to be an estimated $5,860.639.00.
which would leave a estimated fund balance of $501,014.00.
The Budget Committee went through each department’s budget. $41,500.00
worth of requests were either cut or eliminated. First on the elimination
table was the $1000 line item of overtime in the Election Commission’s
request. Most departments requests were left alone in this round of
budget request cuts however the Sheriff’s Department Budget was looked at.
Overtime Pay was cut $5000 to $20,000 for the 2012 2013 fiscal year.
Communication was cut back to $15,000.00 which total trimmed $8000 off the
Sheriff’s Department Budget from $935,674.00 to $927,674.00. The jail
department received a $5,000 cut on their request of Maintenance and Repair
Services for buildings from $25,000 to $20,000. The Fire Departments
received the biggest cuts of the night of their requests. Gasoline Budget
was trimmed $2,000 from a requested $10,000 to $8000. Uniforms were cut
to $13,000 for the year. Office supplies were knocked down to $500.00 and
other charges got chopped $5,000 to show the figure at $2000. The
Committee took a look at the Contributions item and looked into the
$10,000 request from the Chamber of Commerce. After discussing, the
general consensus of the Committee was to trim the request to $5000 with
an additional $1200 if the Chamber agrees to maintain the County Website.
More details on the possibility will be discussed next week.
The next meeting of the Cannon County Budget Committee will be Thursday
July 12th at 6:00 at the Cannon County Courthouse
Election Commission Has To Reschedule Meeting To July 10th
Per state law regarding open records law, the Cannon County Election Commission meeting that was scheduled for tonight must be postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday July 10th at 5:30 at the Election Commission Offices. With the rescheduling, there is no meeting of the Cannon County Election Commission tonight.
Election Commission Looks To Appoint Interim
The recessed meeting from Monday night’s Cannon County Election Commission resumes today. After the Commission voted 3 to 2 to fire Election Administrator Stan Dobson, the Commission will have to go to work in appointing an interim Administrator of Elections. The interim will handle the responsibilities of the position until after the upcoming August 2nd election with early voting beginning July 13th. Legion Post Wants To Start Son Squadron
The Commander of The American Legion Post 279 in Woodbury, Tennessee, Bobby E. Ferrell, wants to start a “Sons of the American Legion” Squadron, to be part of Post 279. Membership eligibility: All male descendants, adopted sons and stepsons of members of the American Legion and such male descendants of veterans who died in service during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, and Persian Gulf, during the delimiting periods set forth in Article IV, Sectin 1, of the National Constitution of the American Legion; or who died subsequent to their honorable discharge from such service, shall be eligible for membership in the “Sons of The American Legion”.
Commander Ferrell wants to get the word out to those men who want to start their own, Squadron of Sons of the American Legion with American Legion Post 279 in Woodbury. This Squadron would have their own separate organization, emblem, and uniform. The Squadron has a 5-Point Program of Service; Patriotism, Citizenship, Discipline, Leadership, and Legionism.
The Squadron members conduct their own programs, such as volunteer programs, youth programs, and assist Post 279 in all activities; they become part of the total team, the Hilton Stone American Legion Post 279, the Auxillary, and the Sons of the American Legion. It takes 10 members to start the Squadron.
This is a great way to carry on that family tradition of honorable service to your country and to your community. Make your Dad or Grandad proud.
If you are interested in becoming a member of this elite Squadron, call Bobby Ferrell at 615-478-8593; Jim Stone at 615-563-6111; Britt Knox at 615-904-5644; Bob Stoetzel at 615-563-8191, for more information.
We are planning to have a quest speaker come and talk to those interested in forming a new “Squadron” at our meeting on Thursday the 19th of July, at 6:30PM, at the Senior Citizens Center in Woodbury. If this can be arranged, details will be published in the Cannon Courier and on WBRY.
Come and be part of a dynamic team doing good things for our community and for our Veterans of Cannon County.
TWRA Reminder About Boating Safety
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officials remind all those who visit the state’s waterways for the July 4th holiday to be safe for what is annually one of the busiest boating times of the year. TWRA officials emphasize the use of personal flotation devices (PFDs) while boating in a safe and responsible manner. The TWRA wants all those who visit the waterways to have an enjoyable time. However, TWRA officers will be on the watch for dangerous boating behavior, such as boating under the influence (BUI) and other reckless operation.
TWRA boating officers are coming off their participation in the fourth annual Operation Dry Water weekend. Operation Dry Water is a national weekend of BUI education and enforcement directed toward reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities. Operation Dry Water is held during a weekend prior to the July 4th holiday to give BUI enforcement high visibility.
A total of 135 TWRA officers participated in the 2012 Operation Dry Water, logging more than 1,700 hours. Officers checked close to 2,400 vessels, wrote 180 citations, another 148 warning and made 19 boating under the influence arrests (BUIs).
One boat operator on Chickamauga Lake was arrested for his second BUI offense in three years.
There were no reported fatalities over the weekend and four injury accidents and three property damage accidents. Of the reported boating accidents, two were alcohol related.
TWRA officers were assisted by police departments and sheriff’s departments, conducting saturation patrols and checkpoints across the state.
Through the Operation Dry Water weekend, there have been six fatal boat accidents resulting in eight fatalities. There have been 45 injury accidents and 40 other accidents that have resulted in property damage. TWRA officers have made 87 BUI arrests, up from 51 at the same time last year and two above the numbers following Operation Dry Water in 2010.
Beware of the “Summer Seven”
While there are health challenges in every season, the summer months are loaded with potential risks and hazards that help fill up emergency rooms and generate unnecessary misery. Most injuries and illnesses occurring from July through September can be avoided with a liberal application of prevention. “There’s no better place than Tennessee in the summer, but too many of us forget to take proper care of ourselves and our families,” said David Reagan, MD, PhD, TDH chief medical officer. “While we’re soaking up as much summer fun as possible, we need to be mindful of the dangers of the season and give more thought to taking care of our bodies. That involves planning for the ‘Summer Seven’ that can do so much damage.”
The ‘Summer Seven’ that can rob you of good health include: sun damage to skin and eyes, food poisoning, drowning, motor vehicle accidents, fireworks injuries, bites and heat-related illness. Follow these tips to stay safe this summer:
Sun damage: The painful reddening of skin many experience year after year is one of the prime causes of skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in America. It is estimated more than one million people each year are diagnosed with skin cancer, and just one bad sunburn can be the cause. Melanoma is the fifth leading cancer in men and the seventh in women. Tragically for many, a diagnosis of skin cancer is the first part of a journey through painful treatment and surgeries, and for some, can turn deadly. If you work or play in the sun, always use sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply these products liberally and often. Don’t forget to protect your eyes with sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection. Among the most common consequences of not wearing sunglasses regularly are the development of cataracts and damage to retinas.
Food poisoning: While Aunt Gertrude’s potato salad may look yummy at the family picnic, mayonnaise and summer heat are a potentially dangerous combination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 76 million Americans will fall victim to food poisoning this year. Food kept out in summer heat for too long is a prime cause, and the effects of food poisoning can range from the unpleasant (upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea) to hospitalization and death. Keep foods in coolers until they are ready to be consumed, and make sure those preparing, handling and eating foods wash their hands thoroughly.
Drowning: While more than 600 people drown annually from boating accidents in America, up to six times that many die in swimming pools. For every child that drowns, up to five times more will suffer near-death accidents in pools. Life preservers are called that for good reason, and should be worn by all boaters without exception. At the pool, there should always be at least one designated person to handle life-saving and who is trained in CPR. Every pool should also have proper life-saving equipment, including a safety ring and rope and an extension pole. Never swim alone or let children swim without supervision by a responsible adult who can also swim.
Motor vehicle accidents: Last year in Tennessee in the months of July, August and September, 28 people in Tennessee died in accidents involving motorcycles and recreational vehicles, and 96 others were killed in car and truck accidents. While alcohol remains a prime factor, other major causes include unnecessarily risky riding or driving, driving while fatigued or impaired from medications and improperly maintained vehicles or equipment. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, more than 50 percent of vehicle fatalities in Tennessee this year have involved people not wearing seat belts. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is increasing its seat belt enforcement efforts, and stepping up efforts to stop texting and driving.
Fireworks injuries: Every year approximately 10,000 people find themselves in emergency rooms with an injury from fireworks. If you insist on putting on your own display, don’t drink alcohol and never let children detonate devices. If the fireworks are rocket-like, make sure they are pointed upward. Don’t hold explosives such as firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-80s or other fireworks in your hand while lighting them. With dry conditions across Tennessee, keep a supply of water or a fire extinguisher handy to help prevent incendiaries from making your lawn or roof part of the show. Be sure to follow any local bans on fireworks and outdoor burning.
Bites: The summer season brings out everything that bites: insects, spiders, snakes and animals. While you are outside, remember there are things that are hungry and sometimes angry or diseased, and that you must develop a skill soldiers call “situational awareness.” This requires you to think about what can harm you, and what you can do to counter the threat. Insect repellant and clothes treated with permethrin will help keep away tiny pests. Special boots and leggings can help prevent snake bites; developing knowledge of where snakes like to stay and avoiding bothering them is also important. If you are outdoors often, hand-held chemical repellants can deter larger animals from biting. It’s best to observe animals from a safe distance, and to remember many domestic and wild animals may carry rabies.
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke: Heat exhaustion is caused by depletion of body fluids and electrolytes and usually occurs in extreme heat or when a person is unable to adapt to heat. Signs include weakness, nausea, cramps and sometimes loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is a more serious condition that occurs when the body’s core temperature rises to dangerous levels, and can damage the brain and other organs. Some signs of heat stroke include short, rapid breathing; confusion; fast pulse; lack of sweating and confusion. These indicate medical treatment is required immediately. In Tennessee in 2010, the most recent year for which data are available, 22 people died from heat-related illnesses. Avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke by limiting time in extreme heat, consuming sufficient quantities of water and avoiding caffeinated drinks, wearing a hat, seeking shade and wearing light-colored clothing.
