These agencies have priorities that are aligned with United Way’s community impact priorities (education, income, health and rebuilding lives) but do not participate in the community investment process.
United Way’s Community Impact Committee, composed of various business and community leaders and volunteers, will review the letters of intent, and invite programs that most closely align with United Way’s mission to apply for a Community Impact Grant.
Letter of Intent applications are available at yourlocaluw.org/CommunityImpact/CommunityImpactGrant/LetterofIntentfor20142015 and are due by October 31, 2013. Letter of intent submission does not result in a guarantee to be invited to apply for a grant. Applying organizations must possess a 501(C)3 IRS status.

Time For A Healthier Halloween
With record numbers of children now overweight or obese, does it make sense for adults to hand out the traditional handfuls of Halloween candy? That’s the question posed by the Tennessee Department of Health, as it suggests some healthier alternatives when costumed characters come calling.“Too many of us, without thinking, hand out calorie-loaded goodies that do great harm to children,” said TDH Family Health and Wellness Director Michael Warren, MD, MPH. “There are many treats children may appreciate even more than another sugary piece of junk food. Fake teeth, stickers, small toys, pencils and other giveaways can be just as much fun to give and receive as unhealthy candy.”
Parents can control the sugar intake of their trick and treating children by considering some simple strategies:
Before the door-to-door activities begin, make sure your child has a balanced dinner. With a full tummy, he or she is less likely to want to eat a big portion of the treats before coming home.
Limit time going to door-to-door so the amount of candy collected is reduced.
When children come home, inspect treats to make sure they have not been tampered with and then stash them out of reach to be issued one or two at a time in the upcoming days. This will extend the holiday fun and provide an important lesson about not overeating sweets.
Consider buying back candy from your children – a few pennies a piece – so they can purchase something they want with their own earned money.
Instead of door-to-door treating, consider hosting a party where food is not the center of activities. That could provide double rewards of a healthier and safer night, away from traffic and well-intentioned candy givers.
Adult Halloween celebrants should also think about themselves and friends. For those who have leftover bags of candy, taking them to work the next day is not doing anyone any favors. Put leftover candy in the freezer out of sight and ration it over time until it’s gone. Tossing it in the trash is also an option. If a decorated cake shows up in the office, limit your tasting to about three small bites and then walk away.
Parents planning to take children trick or treating door-to-door should make safety a priority. A few tips to help prevent accidents:
Add reflective tape to costumes and bags to make children more visible at night and remember to use a flashlight.
Make sure costumes and wigs are marked “flame resistant” before you purchase them and consider non-toxic makeup instead of a mask that can block eyesight.
Decorative contact lenses obtained without a prescription are illegal. They can cause pain and serious eye problems. Don’t use them without an eye examination and a prescription from your eye care professional.
Teach your children how to call 9-1-1 if they become lost or have an emergency. Never let children go unescorted, no matter how safe you think a neighborhood may be.

Jennings Jones Announces Candidacy
Jennings Jones has announced that he is running for the Republican nomination to the office of District Attorney for Rutherford and Cannon Counties. A long time Republican and veteran prosecutor of fifteen years, Jones got his start working as an Assistant District Attorney in General Sessions Court before being promoted to Circuit Court. There, he first worked with Judge Steve Daniel, then with Judge Jim Clayton, Judge Don Ash, Judge Keith Siskin, and Judge David Bragg. In Jones’ fifteen years working for General Bill Whitesell, he has handled thousands of criminal cases covering all levels of misdemeanors and felonies. Jones has taken cases to trial ranging from DUI to First Degree Murder.Jennings Jones stated, “since General Whitesell has announced he will not be seeking re-election, I have decided to run for the office. Bill has done an excellent job as District Attorney and I intend to continue the example he set and search for ways to make the office better. It is my goal to improve the efficiency of the office and establish better communication with the public. I hope to work more closely with law enforcement agencies and residents of our district to make our community a safer place to live. If elected, I will run a tough but fair office of which the residents of Rutherford and Cannon Counties can be proud.”
Jennings Jones was born and raised in Murfreesboro, attends the World Outreach Church, is a member of the Noon Rotary Club and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Jennings & Rebecca Jones Foundation. He is the grandson of Jennings A. Jones, former mayor of Murfreesboro, and founder of the Jones Foundation, a charitable organization that helps children and young adults learn the skills necessary to succeed later in life. Jennings A. Jones was also heavily involved with Middle Tennessee State University, helping to build the Jennings A. Jones College of Business and endowing two Chairs of Excellence at the University. Jones is the son of Ransom Jones, Sr. a prominent Republican and business man, who has served on the Tennessee Higher Education Committee and as Chairman of the Republican Party in Rutherford County.
Jones stated, “it is my hope, should I be fortunate enough to be elected, to continue my family’s tradition of public service by serving the citizens of Rutherford and Cannon Counties as their District Attorney.”
