Cannon County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a Cooper Hollow Road residence for a break in that had already occurred recently.  Homeowner stated that her back door had been kicked in and had some property stolen.  She did not know who might have committed the crime.  After arriving home, she noticed that her back door had been kicked in and old black box TV, DVD player, home interior figurines and a vacuum cleaner had been stolen.  Also strangely enough there had been candles lit in the house and she assumed they were lit so the subjects could see.  Value of the items stolen were over $100.  Deputies took a report and continues to investigate.

Donny Green, DeKalb/Cannon County FSA County Executive Director, has announced that the nomination period for the 2016 Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Committee Election is underway. The nomination period continues through August 1, 2016.
“I encourage all producers to participate in the county committee election process by nominating candidates by the August 1 deadline,” said Green. “We are counting on as much participation as possible, because county committees are an important link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We have seen a trend in recent years of increased nominations of minority, beginning farmers, and women producers and we hope that will continue.”
Committees apply their judgment and knowledge to make decisions on county commodity price-support loan eligibility, establishment of allotments and yields, conservation programs, disaster programs, employment and other farm program-related issues. Nationwide, there are more than 7,800 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. Committees consist of three to five members who are elected by eligible local producers.
To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate.
Nominees must reside in Local Administrative Area (LAA) for which they are seeking to be elected. For the 2016 Election, the DeKalb/Cannon County FSA County Committee Election will conduct elections in LAA-3 (DeKalb County). Below is the description of the LAA that will be conducting elections this year:
Local Administrative Area # 3, the portions of DeKalb County described as following:
East of Hwy. 56 South beginning at the DeKalb/Warren county line, following Hwy. 56 in a northern direction to the intersection of Highway 56 and Highway 70; south of Highway 70 East to Center Hill Lake; following Center Hill Lake north and northwest to the Caney Fork River thence to the Smith County line; south of the Smith County line and west of the Putnam County line to the White County line; west of the White County line to the Warren County line; north of the Warren County line following the county line back to Highway 56 South at the DeKalb/Warren County line.
Individuals may nominate themselves, or others, as a candidate. In addition, eligible candidates can be nominated by community-based and other organizations in the county where the election is being held before the close of the nomination period, especially groups representing socially disadvantaged farmers or ranchers. Nominations and elections are open to all eligible candidates and voters without regard to race, color, religion, nation origin, age, sex, marital status or disability. Ballots will be mailed to all eligible voters in LAA # 3 on November 7, 2016. Completed ballots must be returned, either in person or postmarked, no later December 5, 2016. The Mrs. Annie Cox Memorial Scholarship Committee is proud to announce the awarding of a scholarship to Mr. Tristan Ray Choate, Cannon County High School Senior – Class of 2016, who graduatedMay 27th, 2016.  This scholarship is in memory of longtime educator and beloved Cannon County citizen, Mrs. Annie Cox.  It has been established as an additional financial resource for a student intending to major in Elementary Education who has demonstrated achievement and based on need.Mrs. Cox was a very special person to all of Cannon County, and appropriately this scholarship honors her “Love for Education and Children, Character, Capability, and Need.”The scholarship personifies Mrs. Cox’s words, “I love to see children learn!  I just love it! And want to make a difference in the life of a child.” — Mrs. Annie Cox. 
The Scholarship amount was $1500.00 in which Tristan will use toward his demonstrated need to attend Middle Tennessee State University intending to major in Music Education with emphasis on the elementary level.  He is the son of Billy Choate and Lisa Choate of Woodbury.  Tristan stated in his essay which was a part of the scholarship application, “Scholarships like this one, will help me achieve my dream of becoming an elementary school music teacher, and returning to Cannon County to give back to the community that has given much to me.”
The Mrs. Annie Cox Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Cannon County High School Senior that is on track to graduate this year, have an application pending to or acceptance received from a state accredited two or four year college/university, recommendation of a CCHS faculty member, intending to major in Elementary Education, and write a 300 Word Essay entitled, “Why I deserve this scholarship, and why do I want to be an Elementary Teacher?”
There will be various fundraising efforts by the committee to fund this scholarship including the Annie Cox Memorial Scholarship Car Show held in theFall 2016.

County unemployment rates for April 2016, released Thursday, show the rates decreased in 90 counties, increased in two, and remained the same in three counties.
Cannon County’s unemployment rate for the month of April was 3.7 percent.  Out of an estimated work force of 6030 people, 5810 were employed while 220 were unemployed.  The 3.7 percent figure is down three tenths of a percentage point from the four percent figure reported in March.  All other surrounding counties reported decreases in unemployment figures during the month of April.  Dekalb County is at 5.8 percent while Coffee County reports a 3.8 percent unemployment figure.  Warren County is at 3.7 percent.  Wilson is at 3.2 and Rutherford has the lowest unemployment figure of all the surrounding counties at three percent.
Tennessee’s preliminary unemployment rate for April was 4.3 percent, down two tenths of a percentage point from the previous month’s revised rate. The U.S. preliminary rate for April was 5.0 percent, unchanged from the previous month.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) recognized Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation for leading the valley in its solar energy efforts through the Green Power Providers program, as well as its continued participation and member savings through the EnergyRight Solutions Program.
 
The program is designed to educate members on conserving energy, while also providing them money saving tips and programs.
 
“Middle Tennessee Electric provides the staffing, promotion and resources to ensure that members are aware of and can participate in energy efficiency measures to save on electric bills,” said Cindy Herron, vice president of EnergyRight Solutions for TVA. “MTEMC and TVA will continue to strive to meet the challenges that lie ahead; working together to better promote energy efficiency and clean energy that will make our Valley a better place to live, work, play and raise happy families.”
 
The cooperative was a top performer in the following areas in 2015:
 
– First in the Valley for Green Power Providers with 5.82 percent total capacity from the program and commissioned 194.76 operating Megawatts.
– Ninth in the Valley in overall energy efficiency impact for 2015 with over 7 million kilowatt-hours of savings.
– Fourth overall in the Valley with 756 online self-audit participants for 550,368 kWh of savings.
– Fourth in the Valley with 1,092 eScore participants and 934,800 kWh in savings.
 
“Being a trusted resource for our members to learn ways they can reduce their energy consumption and save money is very important to us,” said MTEMC President Chris Jones. “As we move forward, we want to be that trusted resource for any solar efforts in the valley as well as energy efficiency.”
 
In addition, this past year January, MTEMC, in conjunction with the City of Franklin, TVA and Energy Source Partners, energized a 1,000 kW solar field at Franklin’s Waste Water Management Plant on Claude Yates Drive.
 
The new solar field, which has 3,020 solar panels and sits on five acres behind the plant, is adjacent to the 200 kW system that was commissioned in 2012.
 
“It’s exciting to see the demand and growth for solar power in our service territory,” Energy Efficiency Demand Response Coordinator Todd Palmer said. “This is one of three, one-megawatt solar fields in various planning stages to be brought online over the next year or two.”
 
Through its Renewable Standard Offer and Solar Solutions Initiative programs, MTEMC, joined with the Tennessee Valley Authority, offers developers the opportunity to design renewable energy generation sites larger than 50 kW, and sell back the energy to TVA.
