Americana Artist Mary Gauthier To Perform At Bird Song Studio Saturday

Critically-acclaimed singer songwriter Mary Gauthier  will perform at Bird Song Studio in Woodbury, TN, on Saturday,  at 7:30 PM. Mary’s album Trouble & Love was the feature subject of NPR’s Fresh Air (Listen HERE), The Wall Street Journal (View HERE) and NPR’s First Listen. She garnered unanimous praise from the press, including USA Today, Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, American Songwriter and many more
A powerful and very personal album, the eight carefully crafted songs on Trouble & Love cut to the core as it deals with the roller coaster ride of pain, loss but also hope, transformation and healing. NPR Music said, “To be affected by these songs, you don’t have to know anything of Gauthier’s backstory (Louisiana orphan addict chef turned sober troubadour), the respect she commands across gender lines in the Americana scene, or the heavyweight catalog she’s built out of unflinching introspection and Southern Gothic-shaded storytelling”.  Highlights of Gauthier’s last year included a performance on Good Day LA and a string of appearances on the historic Grand Ole Opry
Tickets for this very special show is $15.00 and can be purchased at the door or in advance on the website thebirdsongstudio.com

Consumer Alert: Beware Of Fake Websites

Fake websites often look and feel real. In fact, most fake websites are direct replicas of genuine websites. These sites may have very similar domain names to their authentic counterparts and will attempt to coerce you to give personal information or download software. Other fake sites may use real business information for a business that does not actually have a website.

The latter instance occurred recently in Knoxville to Cupp’s Auto Sales. Scammers created a fake website using Cupp’s Auto Sales business information to trick buyers into purchasing nonexistent vehicles. Unfortunately for these unsuspecting consumers, Cupp’s Auto Sales does not currently have a website.

So how can you identify fake websites? Here are a couple of ways you can protect yourself:

Use the contact information provided on the website to reach out to the business. If you reach an automated voice messaging system, a number that is not in service or nobody answers during regular business hours, this is a red flag.
Look at the google SafeBrowse report by typing this URL before the site address: http://google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site.
Visit www.whois.net to see domain ownership information. Simply type in the companies URL in the search box and click on the magnifying glass icon. Verify that the results page matches up with the information displayed on the website such as their country, contact information and length of time the website has been in existence.

If you are a business owner and you discover a fake website posing as your business, you can use the www.whois.net to discover its host. At that point you can contact the host and report the site as fraudulent. Once the host verifies the site is fraudulent they will take down the site.

As a good rule of thumb for consumers, research before you buy or download from any website and make sure that the website is an authentic and trusted source. By making the above steps part of your web browsing routine, you will be one step ahead of scammers.

Water Quality Grant Proposals Now Accepted

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture is now accepting grant proposals for projects that will help improve water quality statewide by reducing nonpoint source pollution.

“As we all try to be good stewards of our natural resources, we look to our partnerships to help make great strides in our conservation and water quality efforts,” Agriculture Commissioner Jai Templeton said. “We encourage organizations and agencies to apply for these grants to continue to build on our past success.”

Nonpoint source pollution is soil, urban runoff, fertilizers, chemicals and other contaminants that degrade surface and groundwater quality. The Nonpoint Source Program was created in 1987 as part of the Clean Water Act and provides funding to states to stop nonpoint source pollution.

Local governments, regional agencies, public institutions, private nonprofit organizations and other state agencies are eligible to apply for these federal dollars administered by TDA’s Water Resources office. Highest priority is given to projects that seek to make measurable improvements to waters impaired by nonpoint source pollution. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation assesses water quality. You can see a list of impaired waters online: http://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/environment/attachments/wr_wq_303d-2014-final.pdf

The deadline for submitting grant proposals is Dec. 1. Proposals will be evaluated based on program goals and objectives, performance evaluation criteria and applicable EPA nonpoint source grant guidelines. Other priorities for funding include water quality related educational projects, projects that reduce urban runoff, and projects that aim to protect threatened waters.

The FY 2017 Request for Proposals is posted online: http://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/agriculture/attachments/FY2017_319_RFP…. For more information, contact Sam Marshall with TDA’s Nonpoint Pollution Program at 615-837-5306 or sam.marshall@tn.gov.

Honor Those Who Lost Lives During 9/11 By Giving Blood Thursday

The American Red Cross supports 9/11 Day by offering the community an  opportunity to honor those who lost their lives and the heroes who responded following the tragic events of Sept.11. Two ways to participate in 9/11 Day are to volunteer or donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross and help ensure blood is available for patients in need.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Each year tens of millions of Americans and people around the world observe the anniversary of 9/11 by performing good deeds that help people and communities in need.
9/11 Day was launched in 2002 as an annual day of service to honor the victims and heroes of Sept. 11. Since then, the observance has evolved into the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the U.S. and was designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance by the U.S. Congress in 2009.
“The growth of this observance from a grassroots initiative into the nation’s largest day of charitable engagement speaks directly to the true compassionate nature of millions of Americans and our shared desire to focus on our common humanity,” said Jay S. Winuk.whos is the cofounder of 9/11 Day “With its engagement in 9/11 Day, the Red Cross will make a significant impact, and we’re confident that blood donors, volunteers and organizations from coast-to-coast will answer this call for help while honoring the heroes of 9/11.”
Those who would like to observe 9/11 Day by donating blood or platelets are encouraged to make an appointment Thursday to give blood at the Cannon Community Blood Drive from noon to 6 at the Woodbury Lions Club Building
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.
