Market Event Saturday Benefits Child Advocacy Center
Get ready to hunt for one-of-a-kind treasures this Saturday at the Fall Paisley & Plaid Handmade Market.
This indoor shopping event will feature over 40 artisan vendors with items such as boutique clothing, home decor, jewelry, and children’s apparel. The market is September 10, 2016 at the Lane Ag Center Community Center building from 9am-5pm.
Half of all door proceeds will benefit the Child Advocacy Center of Rutherford & Cannon Counties. The Child Advocacy Center is a non-profit agency that serves victims of child abuse, child sexual abuse, drug endangered children, and their non-offending parents and family members.
“We are so grateful to Paisley & Plaid,” says Kristina Troglen, Development Coordinator of Child Advocacy Center. “It’s humbling to see how community support has such a lasting impact on a child’s life.”
Admission is only $3 at the door and children under 12 are free. The Lane Agriculture Community Center, 315 John Rice Blvd., Murfreesboro.
Chairman and Chairman Pro-Tem Of School Board Will Be Elected Tonight
Time to elect a new chairman to the Cannon County Board Of Education when it meets tonight. This will be the first meeting of the newly elected school board from the August Elections. Javin Fann takes the seat that former Board member Randy Gannon held. Gannon did not seek re-election. On the agenda Lori and Tommy Todd will approach the board about a student transfer request. Cannon County High School principal Mike Jones and Courtney Nichols will address the Board concerning a security window at Cannon County High School. They will approve a audit bid, a representative for TLN and board member Bruce Daniel will address the board concerning property. The meeting starts tonight at 6:30 at the Woodbury Grammar School Cafeteria.
Man Vandalizing Political Signs Caught
A Woodbury man was caught vandalizing political signs in Woodbury earlier this week. According to Woodbury Police Reports, police arrested Roger D. Bryan after he caused damage in the amount of less than $500 after destroying two political yard signs that promoted Andy Duggin for Woodbury Town Mayor. Value of both signs totaled $50. He will answer to the charge of vandalism under $500 in Cannon County General Sessions Court Tuesday October 11th. Other arrests made by the Woodbury Police Department this past week include:

Hit And Run Brings Charges
An apparent hit and run resulted in vandalism charges being brought against a Cannon County man. According to Sheriff’s Department Reports, Deputies were dispatched to Simpson Road. The spoke with the victim David Young who stated that he was at his grandparents house helping feed the animals when allegedly Eric Reneer pulled up and hit David’s car with his truck while David was outside of it. After hitting the car, Reneer backed up, got out of his truck and started taking pictures of the hit car. Then Reneer jumped back into his truck and took off. Reneer is charged with destruction, damage and vandalism of property.
Gilley Hill Cemetery Trust Fund Fundraiser Has Been Cancelled
The Gilley Hill Cemetery Trust Fund was organizing a music fund raiser set to take place Saturday. That fund raiser has been cancelled.
“Why We Remember This Day” Theme Of Upcoming Patriot Day Program
The American Legion Post 279 announces this year’s Patriot Program will take place at the Cannon County High School. The program is an observance of remembering the events of September 11 2001. Much like the annual Veterans Day program, the students of Cannon County High School will help put together the program slated for Monday September 12. The theme is “Why We Remember This Day” Music will be provided by the Cannon County High School Band as well as special ceremonies and special guest speaker will be Brent Bush. Everyone is welcome to attend. The program is free and will start at 10:30 in the Cannon County High School gym.
Sheriff Conley Subject Of Upcoming Historical Society Meeting
The Cannon County Historical Society announces its next meeting will be on Tuesday September 13th at 6:30 PM at the Cannon County Senior Center 309 Lehman Street in the small dining area.
The subject of the meeting will be “The Life and Career of Sheriff Pharis M. Conley” The speaker will be the granddaughter of Conley, Lu Ann Curlee.
Sheriff Conley served three terms as Cannon County Sheriff from 1948-1954. He also served as an ABC agent from 1954 and was elected as General Sessions Court Judge in 1960. Sheriff Conley was nicknamed the “Green Hornet”. Refreshments will start the evening at 6:30 so bring your favorite dish. The program begins at 7:00. The program is free and open to the public.
Scarecrows On The Square Contest Begins In October
The Scarecrows on the Square contest is returning to the Woodbury Courthouse square this year in time for Halloween. The rules for the contest are as follows: Scarecrows are to be family oriented, no taller than 6 foot. The scarecrows will be hung on the lampposts around the square so no part of the exhibit can be sitting on the ground. There must be at least six entries for the contest to take place.
Scarecrows must be hung by the first week of October will be taken down November 1st.
Due to lack of storage space please make arrangements to have your scarecrow picked up by November 1st.
Entry fee is $5.00 per scarecrow and 1st place wins all the entry fees! Amount of prize money depends on how many entries are submitted.

Cannon Tourism Up According To Latest Report
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Kevin Triplett last week announced Tennessee tourism’s direct domestic and international travel expenditures reached an all-time high of $18.4 billion in 2015, up 3.7 percent over the previous year, as reported by the U.S. Travel Association. For the 10th consecutive year, tourism topped $1 billion in state and local sales tax revenue, reaching $1.6 billion, up 7 percent over 2014. Tourism-generated jobs for Tennesseans reached 157,400, an increase of 2.9 percent.
Top five counties include Davidson, Shelby,Sevier, Hamilton , and Knox , who were acknowledged during the event for all achieving more than $1 billion in travel expenditures. All 95 counties in Tennessee had more than $1 million in direct travel expenditures; 19 counties saw more than $100 million each.
2015 figures showed Cannon County businesses earned $250,000.00 in state tax receipts a 5.7% increase from 2014 and $280,000.00 in local tax receipts which was a 4.4% from a year ago.
Tennessee is ranked in the Top 10 destinations in the U.S. for total travel, with more than 105 million in total visitation, a 3.9% increase over 2014, as reported by D.K. Shifflet & Associates.
“The hard work of Tennessee’s tourism industry, strategically led by the Department of Tourist Development and the Tennessee Tourism Committee, continues to produce record results,” Gov. Haslam said. “More travelers from around the world are visiting Tennessee each year, and the $1.6 billion in sales tax revenue and growth in jobs is good news for every Tennessean.”
