Friday 22 August 2008Noon Thursday marked the deadline for filing papers to run in the Town of Woodbury’s municipal elections. As the deadline passed it became clear that Woodbury will have a new mayor in December and the race for the Town’s six Board of Mayor and Aldermen seats will be contested. Current Woodbury Mayor Ricky Cope decided not to seek reelection this year. The only candidate who expressed interest in the job was current Clerk and Master and former Cannon County County Executive Harold Patrick. He will take office in December. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen race on the other hand is not as clear cut. Eleven individuals have are seeking the six available seats on the board. Incumbent members Faye Nortcutt-Knox Charlie Harrell Dottie Duggin Adam Melton JoAnn Davis and LuAnn Curlee have all chose to seek re-election. The incumbents will be opposed by five challengers. Former Clerk and Master Lois Gilley Larimer and past Woodbury Alderman Shade Cason will be seeking seats on the Board as well as Francis Foster Jenny Haynes and Bobby Moore. Thursday was also the deadline to file papers to run in Auburntown’s municipal election. The Auburntown race will definitely lack the competition of the Woodbury race as none of the announced candidates is opposed. Current Auburntown Mayor Roger Turney is unchallenged in his reelection bid. In addition to the Mayor’s race the three open seats on the Auburntown City Council are also up for grabs and only three candidates have filed papers. The announced candidates are Ruby Davenport Reba Davis and Beth Hancock. All of those individuals will receive complimentary votes in November. The election will be held on November 4th in conjunction with the Federal and State General election.
